14 – 22 March 2009
at the Mariinsky Theatre
Artistic Director of the Festival – Valery Gergiev

The International Ballet Festival MARIINSKY was first run in 2001. The festival's main aim was to bring world ballet stars to Russia's cultural capital. The Mariinsky Ballet Company is known well beyond St Petersburg, but world-renowned dancers, and to an even greater extent dance companies, appeared on tour to the Mariinsky Theatre on extremely rare occasions.
The IX International Ballet Festival MARIINSKY will see the participation of such world ballet stars as Polina Semienova, Viengsay Valdes, Vladimir Malakhov, Mikhail Kaniskin, Marcelo Gomes, Ángel Corella and Dmitry Gudanov as well as internationally acclaimed Mariinsky Theatre dancers including Diana Vishneva, Ulyana Lopatkina, Viktoria Tereshkina, Alina Somova, Yekaterina Kondaurova, Yevgenia Obraztsova, Anastasia Matvienko, Igor Zelensky, Leonid Sarafanov, Vladimir Shklyarov and Mikhail Lobukhin.
In line with tradition the Festival opens with a premiere. This year it will be The Little Humpbacked Horse to music by Rodion Shchedrin and choreography by Alexei Ratmansky. The Musical Director and Conductor of the production is Valery Gergiev.
The Festival will also see the premiere of another ballet - Diana Vishneva: Beauty in Motion, consisting of three one-act ballets staged especially for the acclaimed ballerina. Ulyana Lopatkina's gala will prove one of the highlights of the Festival, as will the closing gala performance featuring all the stars of this year's Festival and artists of the Novosibirsk Theatre of Opera and Ballet.

THE X INTERNATIONAL MARIINSKY BALLET FESTIVAL 2010
From 15 to 25 April the Mariinsky Theatre will be running its anniversary tenth International Ballet Festival – one of the highlights of the world’s ballet season which draws balletomanes from across the globe to St Petersburg.
The festival will see performances by Alina Cojocaru (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden), David Hallberg and Daniil Simkin (American Ballet Theatre), Polina Semionova (Staatsballett Berlin), Mathieu Ganio (Opéra de Paris), leading Bolshoi Theatre soloists Natalia Osipova, Svetlana Zakharova, Maria Alexandrova and Andrei Uvarov and lead Mariinsky Theatre Diana Vishneva, Ulyana Lopatkina, Alina Somova, Viktoria Teryoshkina, Yekaterina Kondaurova, Igor Zelensky, Leonid Sarafanov, Andrian Fadeyev and Vladimir Shklyarov.
In line with tradition, the festival opens with a premiere. In the premiere performances the lead roles will be performed by Diana Vishneva (15 April) and Ulyana Lopatkina (16 April), two outstanding Mariinsky Theatre ballerinas with different artistic temperaments and performing styles. They will be partnered by Andrian Fadeyev (15 April) and Yuri Smekalov (16 April).
Ratmansky’s Anna Karenina has been a ballet hit throughout Europe in recent years. Initially staged by the choreographer for the Danish National Ballet, it has subsequently been performed by other great ballet companies throughout the world; it has also received the prestigious Benois de la danse prize.
Another premiere of the festival will be the legendary Shchedrin-Bizet Carmen Suite with choreography by Alberto Alonso. The production is being staged at the Mariinsky Theatre with the participation of Maya Plisetskaya, the first performer of the role of Carmen in this ballet. The Mariinsky Theatre premiere on 19 April will be performed by Ulyana Lopatkina.
One of the festival’s highlights will be the Evening of Young Choreographers on 23 April, where three young contemporary choreographers – Edwaard Liang, Emil Faski and Yuri Smekalov – will present their one-act ballets, created specially for the Mariinsky Ballet Company’s leading soloists – Yekaterina Kondaurova, Viktoria Teryoshkina and Leonid Sarafanov.
Yet another highlight of the festival will be a performance featuring by stars of the world’s greatest ballet companies together with Mariinsky Theatre partners in a programme of duets from the Mariinsky Theatre’s “gold reserves”. In Romeo and Juliet with choreography by Leonid Lavrovsky, on 17 April Polina Semionova (Staatsballett Berlin) will be performing alongside Vladimir Shklyarov (Mariinsky Theatre); in La Bayadère on 18 April, the lead roles will be danced by Viktoria Teryoshkina and Igor Zelensky (Mariinsky Theatre) and Maria Alexandrova (Bolshoi Theatre); on the evening of 19 April the title role in George Balanchine’s Apollo will be performed by Mathieu Ganio (Opéra de Paris); on 20 April Natalia Osipova (Bolshoi Theatre) will be performing Giselle together with Leonid Sarafanov (Mariinsky Theatre); Swan Lake on 21 April will feature the duo of Svetlana Zakharova and Andrei Uvarov (both Bolshoi Theatre); and on 24 April Alina Somova (Mariinsky Theatre) and David Hallberg (American Ballet Theatre) will be performing the lead roles in The Sleeping Beauty.

X International Ballet Festival «MARIINSKY» 2010

The 10th International Ballet Festival «Mariinsky» («Мариинский») opened in St. Petersburg on April 15 with an unprecedented action – a live 3D broadcast of the event. For the first time in the world a gala concert of the «Mariinsky» stars was broadcast with the help of a new technology – in a 3D format. Hundreds of thousands of people in Russia and Europe, who on that very day made themselves comfortable in the viewing halls with special equipment, or tuned their home receivers to a 3D channel, had a chance to see the gala concert of the «Mariinsky» ballet stars.
«To test, to experiment and to give a boost to budding ballet dancers» – such are the tasks of the «Mariinsky» ballet festivals, according to the world-famous conductor Valery Gergiyev (Валерий Гергиев). There’re 5 premieres on its programme. The «Anna Karenina» («Анна Каренина») ballet by Rodion Shchedrin (Родион Щедрин), in the choreographic version of Alexei Ratmansky (Алексей Ратманский), was shown on the first day. Earlier Alexei Ratmansky made his debut as a producer here on the «Mariinsky» stage. Alexei Ratmansky has become one of the most sought-after choreographers in the world today. He produced «Anna Karenina» for the Royal Danish Ballet. This ballet was also staged in Helsinki, Warsaw and Vilnius, and was awarded the prestigious Benois de la Danse prize.
Among those who added more pearls to the St. Petersburg crown of the «Anna Karenina» ballet were the two stars of the «Mariinsky» Theatre – Diana Vishnyova (Диана Вишнёва), who danced the part of Anna Karenina on April 15th, and Ulyana Lopatkina (Ульяна Лопаткина), who performed the same part on April 16th. They are absolutely different: Vishnyova is spontaneous, young and impetuous, and Lopatkina is a very restrained person, who is unwilling to show her feelings. Their participation alone stirs the feelings of the audience. Ulyana Lopatkina is also engaged in one more premiere – in the «Carmen-Suite» («Кармен-Сюита») by Bizet-Schedrin. «Such a whirlwind of feelings is simply a present for any dancer», Lopatkina noted. It would also be good to mention here that Maya Plisetskaya, the first performer of the part of Carmen, who so far remains unparalleled in this part, consulted Ulyana Gromova.
The world ballet stars, performing on the leading stages of New York, London, Paris, Berlin, and Moscow, will dance in the unfading ballet classics, which is richly presented on the festival’s play-bill. Our compatriot Vladimir Malakhov (Владимир Малахов), who has danced on the leading stages of the world, comments: It is necessary to dance ballet classics – it prolongs your life. But on the other hand, it would be good to surprise the audience with something that would be absolutely new. That is why we address new things.
The original version of the ballet «Giselle» («Жизель»), presented by the cult choreographer Mats Ek, is classics and an innovation at one and the same time. And of course, an international team of young choreographers has demonstrated its thirst for novelties in a special programme, titled «New Generation», which consists of 3 one-act ballets. Presenting the current festival, which will continue till April 25th, Valery Gergiyev said: «The “Mariinsky” Theatre is called the «Mecca of Ballet». The works, which later became known as the most important landmarks in the development of the world choreography, appeared here. And our festival must show everything the Russian choreography school is proud of today»
